Mount Pleasant - 917 Words
Mount Pleasant â⬠Mount Pleasantâ⬠is a short story written by Mary-Louise Buxton. It is written as a first person narrator, as a child called Elizabeth. It is written quite unstructured, mostly describing the life of Elizabeth and her family in their home in Mount Pleasant, not showing the stories twist until the end. The narrator uses a very childish language using expressions like ââ¬Å"Mammyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"babby brotherâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Eeny meeny miny moâ⬠. As a short story, the plot and character descriptions are quite simple, but this story is written in a way where you can interpret a lot, without reading it. It is not told where the family comes from, or who the owners of the old house were, but it leaves hints, by the details of the story. It doesnââ¬â¢t sayâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It personally reminds me of my grandmotherââ¬â¢s old house, which was about 150 years old, very big, and seemed to have a lot of stories hiding around every corner, and at the same time every childââ¬â¢s fantasy where you can run around all over the house, and imagine all sorts of crazy scenarios of the old owners, and the ghosts that might be hiding. The name of the house ââ¬Å"Mount Pleasantâ⬠makes the house seem quite harmless and joyful, but really it seems to have a lot of secrets. It might have got the name when it was founded, and was in fact harmless and joyful, but since then, it had owners to give it a story and secrets, and perhaps even ghosts. Elizabeth, the main character, seems like a typical little girl, 9-10 years old, likes to play and cares a lot about her family. She is carefree, positive and curious, but also has childish fears like the dark. She and her sister is well-liked by the town community, and she seems to like people easily as well. Her mother is very bossy, criticizing Elizabeth and the rest of the family very easily, but Elizabeth doesnââ¬â¢t seem to care much, having a quite simple view on life, but with a imaginative mind. Her father is quite the opposite of her mother, allowing her to play longer, and not punishing her like the mother. Elizabeth also mentions her sister Lena, her brothers Alec and George William, her cousins and grandmother. While discovering the new house Elizabeth finds a photograph of a little boy,Show MoreRelatedMount Pleasant1101 Words à |à 5 Pagesâ⬠Mount Pleasantâ⬠By Mary-Louise Buxton In this short story called ââ¬Å"Mount Pleasantâ⬠, you see the world through a childââ¬â¢s eyes because the short story is written with a unique narrative technique and language. Roman Society and Medieval Society The Comparison Free Essays
There are many distinct differences between Medieval society as illustrated by Achen in 800 AD and Roman society as illustrated by Pompeii in 79 AD, with some similarities. There are many aspects to examine, such as education, religion, tolerance, social classes, materialism, view of time, infra-structure, trade and cities. The first difference to look at is cities and that they were structured differently. We will write a custom essay sample on Roman Society and Medieval Society: The Comparison or any similar topic only for you Order Now In Pompeii, there was the patrician and plebeians. In Achen, classes were different, although the Christian church viewed everyone as equal. The classes contained and separated lords, knights, peasants and serfs. One thing common between these cities were slaves. Education is another part of these cultures. In Pompeii, many of the citizens were literate and schooling began at an early age. In Achen, even Charlemange couldnâ⬠t read or write, although he made repeated attempts to revive learning. The people who were literate were mainly monks. Religion is another difference between the cultures. In Pompeii, religion was based on polytheism, whereas in Achen it was monotheistic because most were Christian. From religion comes another aspect, that of tolerance. In Achen, there was no tolerance or acceptance of other religions. In Pompeii, they mostly were accepting. Materialism consumed people of Pompeii. For example, during the eruption of Vesuvius, citizens could be seen running away carrying all their valuable gold jewelry and belongings. In Achen, there was the Christian belief that you should die a pauper because your afterlife is what mattered. Afterlife is what affected the people of Achenâ⬠s view of time. They were thinking about heaven and their life in eternity. In Pompeii, people were concerned with their every day life and chores. Another part of the cultures to compare is infra-structure. In Pompeii, they had aqueducts, which was an advanced water piping system and stone roads. In Achen, the most they had was ruins of the Roman civilization. This relates to the affect of trade in the time periods. In Pompeii, trade was bustling because of the easy transportation on roads. For Achen, there was no trade at all. They were most concerned with providing enough food for themselves. This makes another difference between the two places. Pompeii was a busy, fairly-sized city. Achen was merely a village, hardly busy in the least. There are many more things to compare between Achen and Pompeii. But from what is represented in my essay, it is clear how far from similar Achen and Pompeii are. Cargo Ship free essay sample
The concept of utilization is not a new one; it was used by the USA army in the second world army war to provide its forces fighting in Europe with weapons and ammunition. Unitization since that time has been used and developed to comprise all modes of maritime transport, as well as air and land transport modes. Definition: Utilization is a grouping together of two or more (Usually of a homogeneous nature) and securing with banding, glue, shrink-wrap, slings or permanent (e. g. lover leaf), to form a unit which, together with a Base (skids, pallets, etc. ) Or a permanent sling allows Mechanical handling equipment (e. g. tynes of a fork Life truck) to lift and transport the unit. In addition, Unitized cargo can aslo be defined as the grouped cargo that is carried aboard a ship in pallets, containers, wheeled vehicles, and barges or lighters. In other words, unitization of cargo is the process of grouping products and loading them onto a pallet once the products are properly packed. Advantages of unitization: * Ease of tallying. * Reduced breakage. * Reduced pilferage * Faster speed of working between ship and shore (and on ship or shore). * Reduced labour requirements when handling between interfaces. * May make more effective use of vertical storage space in sheds and holds by stacking 4,5 or 6 units high. Disadvantage of unitization: * Loss of spaces below decks where the ship of the vessel is compatible with the space of the unit. * Loss of spaces caused by the shape of the package beginning unitized, e. g. drums on pallets. * Collapsed or crushed units requires labour intensive efforts to rectify, handle and store. * An element of extra cost involved in the pallet, slings , skids, shrink-wrap, strapping , etc.
